Supply chain optimization for electricity-based jet fuel: The case study Germany

Electricity-based jet fuel from renewables, also labeled sustainable aviation (SAF), is expected to play a key role in the defossilization of aviation. The realization first plants for production such power-to-liquid (PtL) fuels imminent. This raises challenge an effective PtL supply chain design, which addressed this work. A novel optimization approach introduced that enables integrated selection sites and technologies. Economically favorable designs are presented case study Germany, with primarily located wind power rich greater North Sea coast area. Heide Refinery Emsland Lingen particularly suited synthesis, while cement iron & steel preferred as CO2 point sources. shows at electricity price 0.05 € kWh−1, costs SAF range 2052 2258 t−1. minimum obtained volume equivalent 4 % national demand. To achieve envisioned 2030 target 2 SAF, investment 1.6 B€ expected.
